From the age of 13 through my mid 40’s I was obese. I had no clue what I was doing to myself. Like most people I just didn't worry about it. Driving a keyboard since the early 70's, working 12-16 hour days and the only exercise I was getting was feeding myself. Friends and family would tell me about it, I just wouldn't listen. I really didn't see the big deal.
In 1995 I decided that I'd had enough when I got very sick, knowing that it was due to my lifestyle I decided to make a change. I didn't really know what to do. I just knew I had to do something. By now I was wearing size 52 pants and my 3x shirts were getting too tight to wear. Walking was becoming work. That alone should have been an indicator but I had no idea where to even start. So I did what I did during those years. My regular job was research, so I started researching. Researching and trying.
Through a lot of research and trial and error I took off most of the fat using various fat loss methods and by 1999 was pretty thin. t took me four years to do it. All those years of being 350+ pounds had taken a large toll on my body. I couldn't do anything without pain somewhere. The various doctors I had been to had me doing things I probably should've stayed away from. But, through learning to eat properly and exercise that including large amounts of weight lifting it slowly came off.

But I still wasn’t satisfied. I looked better, felt thinner, but weak, tired all of the time. I couldn't do much at all. I figured it doesn't matter at all if you can't move and function at least a little bit. I was getting injured pretty often doing every day tasks around the house. I wanted to be stronger, I wanted to move without pain. I was approaching 50 and my current quality of life was pretty low from my point of view. I knew I did it to myself but I figured there just had to be a fix. Most everyone told me that it's just part of aging and I should accept it. I didn't believe that. It just didn't seem logical that getting older had to equate to getting weaker and frail. So I kept looking for solutions. I found solutions, several, no many. It was finding the ones that worked for me that counted. Researching, learning academics mean nothing if not put into practice so that's what I do. I never stop learning and practicing what I learn. I try, and keep trying. Giving up is not a solution.
Today, I’m not into training for looks. Today it’s about overall strength and function. I’m stronger and more fit that I have been in my life. I plan on being stronger 10 years from now than I am today. I have no reason to believe otherwise. Jeff O’Connor once told me that I could be stronger at 70 than at 50. I believed him then and I believe him now. Now my training focuses on the kettlebell or girya, as taught to me by Sr. RKC Jeff O’Connor, bodyweight and the basic barbell lifts along with various strongman moves.

My supplement regimen consists of protein powders and EFAs, vitamin D and a B12 supplement and that's about it, nothing fancy.

Now I work with other like minded people wanting to make lifestyle changes. Change to better their health and obtain a better quality of life. I really like helping others do the same thing I did. Especially in the area of fat loss. I have regular training classes and meet with others one on one with the basics of life. Overall healthier eating and moving. Having come from a background of obesity, taking it off and keeping it off gives me a perspective not a lot of other trainers share. I've been there, I KNOW what its like to have to check out the sturdiness of a chair before I sat in it. Having to turn sideways in a doorway to get through. I see it differently. I KNOW how tough it is.
